OPERATION CLEAROUT

The day got off to a good start, everyone up early and breakfast over by nine thirty, during breakfast the meat delivery arrived. I must say it all looked very good, unfortunately the eight pork joints and the wild boar steaks did not arrive. Thankfully the mistake was sorted out with a phone call and the missing items will arrive on Friday so all is well. My son manfully began the clearing of his room, deciding what to keep and what to discard was a wrench as some of the things were childhood treasures. We decided to put a sign up on the gate saying “FREE STUFF” and soon there were lots of happy people trotting off with bags full of CDs, DVDs, Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons miniatures, it was brilliant, seeing everyone so happy. A few asked us why we did not sell the things and it was hard to explain that some things are just too special to sell.

A good deal of the day was taken up with carting bags of stuff about and sorting through the books. I did manage to do the roast pork dinner I had promised the boys and we had a lovely blueberry jelly for afters. The garden was bone dry again and I had the hoses running all day, a thing I try to avoid if possible, if the pumpkins and squashes dry out now we shall lose the crop, the tomatoes too will suffer if they do not get enough water; I still have a bad conscience about it though.

The whole house looks as if a hurricane has passed through but I look at at this way, at least I can get away without doing any housework for a day or two, to coin a phrase “always look on the bright side of life”. The cat is not at all pleased, she is wandering about like a displaced person, all her favourite places are stuffed up with books and board games and the orchard is soaking wet, if looks could kill I would be as dead as a doornail. We are all shattered and in need of a hot bath and a stiff drink.......or several! Tomorrow we begin again, roll on next week,
